August’s $199 (£155, au$265) doorbell cam pro is a second-generation model with 1,280×960-pixel high-definition (HD) resolution and on-demand live streaming capabilities. You have to connect it to your existing doorbell wires and it will only work with traditional mechanical chimes, but it’s a decent buzzer overall.

Review: wirecutter

The ring video doorbell 2, the most versatile of ring’s line of doorbell cams, is easy to install and can be powered either by your existing doorbell wiring or with an included, removable rechargeable battery. Ring’s smartphone alerts are consistent and fast, and recorded video always looks crisp and bright.

Though a ring protects subscription is required in order to view and store video clips, the $3-per-month (or $30 per year) plan for 60 days of storage is cheaper than any other doorbell’s subscription. Review: Reviews.com

love the ring video doorbell pro for its sleek, modern design, rectangular shape, and a raised button that makes it look close enough to a standard doorbell to not confuse guests. We also love that the ring pro comes with four different faceplates — silver, charcoal, black, and white — to help it blend in, no matter the color of your house.

Every video doorbell is larger than a standard house doorbell since it has to fit in more technology. As a result, some video doorbells come out bulky. The ring pro is the smallest doorbell of our top picks. Instead of looking like a small brick, it can rest in the palm of your hand while you (just about) close your fingers over it.

Review: STRATEGIST

If a Ring, Nest, or Skybell feels like to heft a commitment, the Zmodo goes for only $80 (which likely explains it’s also an Amazon top seller, along with the company’s now in-house brands) and has earned plenty of praise from gadget reviewers for working just as well as the fancier models.

This was the most affordable doorbell that we tested, and I was really hoping it’d perform even marginally ok given the more affordable price point ($150). The zmodo greet wound up outpacing half of the other models for its reliable connectivity, clear picture, and intuitive app. You even get free storage of any motion detection or answered calls for up to 36 hours (with incremental cloud storage packages available too).

Review: WIRED

Nest’s hardwired unit can use its computer vision technology to recognize faces. Train it by tagging friends and relatives in your video feed, and the system will issue alerts when they arrive. It can announce them by name on your phone’s screen or through any Google Home speaker.

If a stranger shows up, you can keep things transactional with a quick, prerecorded greeting. Video from the Hello is clear, even with tricky shadows or at night, and the doorbell can stream continuous footage if you want to survey your stoop from afar. Review: Cnet

The $179 (£140, au$235) ring video doorbell is a 720p hd model that’s powered by your existing doorbell wires or the included rechargeable battery. While the battery does allow for a more flexible install, you do have to remove the entire faceplate when you want to recharge it.

That means you won’t be able to keep an eye on your front door every time you charge this buzzer — which will happen more quickly if you regularly use battery-draining features such as the live feed.

Review: Reviewed

This was the largest smart doorbell in our test group, and it proved that size isn’t everything. The app setup was clunky, and it didn’t give me the option to live-stream the camera feed, which all the others did with no issue.

It took noticeably longer to connect the app to the doorbell than the others, and the app’s notifications lagged considerably. If you’re waiting on a package delivery or a cable guy, this doorbell is just too risky.
