Apple finally announced a new version of the MacBook Air — an evergreen student favorite — which now starts at $1,199 (£1,199, AU$1,849). The new model offers some nice upgrades including a Retina display, Touch ID and USB-C ports. That noted, many folks don’t love the feel of the new MacBook Air’s “Butterfly” keyboard, and, frankly, none of the recent updates are essential. The older version, from 2017, which has Apple’s traditional and beloved keyboard, can often be found for far less — usually under $900 — making it the better value.

Lenovo, in revamping its gaming-laptop line for ’18, scores with its fresh-looking legion y530. This machine punches above its weight, offering a sharp design in a compact, sturdy build that apes a pricier gaming laptop. And despite its budget-mindedness (models start at $749.99), it doesn’t make any major design concessions. Its Nvidia GeForce gtx 1050 graphics chip is no powerhouse, but the y530 proves to be a competent HD gaming machine with no real flaws. Our $1,029-list test model, as we wrote this, was available for $849.99, a great deal. (Lenovo’s web pricing is notoriously prone to fluctuation.) versus the similarly priced competition, it’s simply a bit better than you’d expect in most areas, snagging our editors’ choice for budget gaming laptops.

The best thing about the HP Omen is its display. With its vibrant colors and thin bezels, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the best displays I’ve ever seen on a mid-range gaming laptop. When I watched the trailer for Detective Pikachu (don’t judge me), Pikachu’s yellow fur really popped against the dark backgrounds.

A series of minor but welcome changes to Lenovo’s consumer 13-inch 2-in-1 convertible laptop mean that the latest model, the Lenovo Yoga 730 (starts at $799.99, $849.99 as tested), is thinner, lighter, and more powerful than its Yoga 720 predecessor. The improvements are probably not enough to prompt an upgrade if you already have the previous model, but they make this laptop an even better choice if you want a single device to use mostly as a laptop and occasionally as a tablet or movie player. It’s our new Editors’ Choice for midrange convertible laptops.

For a more midrange option, take a look at the Lenovo miix 510, available for $570. It’s easy to carry to class and gets good battery life, but it also has a nice extra feature: you can remove the screen from the keyboard and use it as a tablet. I’ve found this tremendously helpful when I have to read a long document — you can still highlight or make notes about important parts, but if you have to go through a hundred pages of something, the tablet makes it easier. If you have a little wiggle room in your budget, you can invest in the version that has 8 GB of ram for $720, which should future-proof you and make sure memory hogs like chrome keep running smoothly, even as web apps get more demanding in the coming years.

Review: DigitalTrends

Ranked as the best budget Chromebook in our guide, the Acer Chromebook 15 packs a rare 1080p IPS display — most budget machines are limited to 720p. That also makes it the chrome os laptop with the largest display on this list at 15.6 inches, which might impact portability but certainly helps with productivity and media viewing.

Internally, the Chromebook 15 packs an Intel Celeron n3060 processor, paired up with 4gb of memory and 32gb of solid-state storage. There is a 16gb version for those who want to save a few dollars, but there isn’t much difference in price between the two, and doubling the onboard storage is a worthy upgrade.

Until recently, I would have steered you clear of a Chromebook. They’re cheap, but they weren’t great personal machines — everything is meant to be run in the cloud, which meant you couldn’t store much on your hard drive. It also meant that you’d be unable to run MS Excel, and while Google Sheets can do a lot, if you’re taking any sort of business, economics, or statistics classes, you’ll likely need to have Excel to do everything you need to do. But the Chromebook Samsung Plus is available for $450 and can run Android apps, which gives you access to Excel. It’s also a convertible, so you can flip the screen 360 degrees and have a tablet to go over a reading assignment. Still, I’d check in with your campus IT department before jumping all-in — they may have some reservations or advice about using a Chromebook as your main personal machine.

Review: 9to5google

In 2019, Intel’s low-end, fanless chipsets are capable for most tasks, but they suffer on Chrome OS when it comes to Android apps especially. To get around that, the Lenovo Chromebook C330 uses a MediaTek MT8173c chipset paired with 4GB of RAM, and it actually runs pretty well given the price point.

HP EliteBook 8470p ($1,499 direct) is a business-class laptop. But that classification doesn’t cover all of its capabilities. Review: Customer

This laptop is ok. It’s not bad, really. For $160, I’m surprised at how not awful it is, but still you need to be a bit tech savvy to operate it.

First, it gets HOT. As soon as I turned it on, within ten minutes my lap was hot and I could feel heat radiating from the keyboard. But, even an hour later, it was still hot but nothing broke.

Bustling with powerful specs such as a Core i7 CPU and and 16 GB of RAM, the Acer Spin 3 ($479 starting; $799 as tested) is a robust 2-in-1 laptop. This marks the first time the Spin 3 is available in an i7 configuration.
