The first time you install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you’re given a 14-day trial of the premium edition, which includes preventative tools like real-time scanning and specific protection from ransomware. After two weeks, it reverts to the basic free version.

This has to be activated manually, but is still a top-notch security tool. We recommend running it at least once a week to check or any nasties that you haven’t noticed, or if you notice that your web browser has suddenly started acting strangely (likely a result of adware).

4. Emsisoft Emergency Kit

Emsisoft Emergency Kita

Review:  techradar

If you’re called in to help a friend with a malware infestation, Emsisoft Emergency Kit is the tool for you. It’s a portable app, so you can keep it handy on a USB stick, or your cloud storage service of choice (it’s only 591MB, though it does generate log files, which will take up a little extra room).

Like any malware removal tool, Emsisoft Emergency Kit has a database of current threats, and the PC you’re cleaning needs an internet connection so the software can check for updates.

5. SuperAntiSpyware

SuperAntiSpyware

Protect your computer from threats: spyware, adware, trojans, ransomware, PUPs, hijackers, and more.Get the most up-to-date protection with database updates 2-4x a day and in-depth system scanning and removal tools.

Review: Capterra

I have been using SUPERAntiSpyware for around 10 years and I can say without a doubt that it is one of the best out there. It is very lightweight, takes only seconds to update, and scans are much faster than most of the others. I also run SAS as a secondary cleaner when working on an infected machine (behind Malwarebytes or Combofix).

The only gripe that I have with SUPERAntiSpyware is showing me an entry for EVERY tracking cookie that it found. This has given me anxiety in the past because I thought my machine was severely infected.

For 10+ years now SUPERAntiSpyware has kept me virus and spyware free. I have it on every computer in my home, and prefer it over any other AV software.

6.  ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware

ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware1

ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware analyzes all suspicious activities on your PC. It detects Ransomware attacks, blocks them and immediately restores any encrypted files.

Review: PCmag

The best antivirus utilities use many different layers of protection, from the matching of malware signatures to heuristic analysis to behaviour-based detection. Every now and then, though, some new attacker makes it through all the layers and plants something nasty on your PC.

In most cases, an antivirus update wipes out the malware infestation within a few days, or even hours. That can be a hollow victory, however, if the attack involved ransomware. Sure, the malware itself is gone, but your files remain encrypted and inaccessible.

Because of that potential for lasting damage, you’d be wise to install an additional layer of protection designed specifically for ransomware protection—something like Check Point ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus

The midrange Internet Security has everything most people need, with parental controls and a hardened browser. They’re our choices in the premium and intermediate categories for best Windows antivirus software.

But the entry-priced software, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, looks pretty bare compared to its more fully kitted-out rival Bitdefender Antivirus Plus.

Kaspersky Lab’s slate of Windows antivirus programs starts with Kaspersky Free software, which offers basic malware protection and warns about dangerous websites. Like all Kaspersky programs, it supports Windows 7 through Windows 10.

Review: TopTenReviews

Norton provides a 100 per cent virus protection guarantee. Parental controls are not available for Mac or iOS devices.Norton Security is one of the best computer protection programs, with solid security features, including 25GB of online backup.

While testing Norton Security Premium, we saw it was quick to block malicious Trojan and rootkit downloads before they could infect our test computer. Norton even interrupted hidden downloads from sites that showed 404 or account-suspended messages. It displayed clear messages if we attempted to visit a website that was known for harbouring viruses or phishing schemes.

This computer protection program goes the extra mile and gives in-browser reports that detail exactly what threat was stopped. It also tells you where on your computer the virus is attempting to download, how many other Norton users the virus has attempted to attack, and any other sites that may harbor the same threat.

10. Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus

Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus

As activities like shopping, banking, and financial planning continue to migrate to the web, cybersecurity stakes continue to rise. The features that help keep you safe – like password management, mobile security, and identity and privacy protection – aren’t included in most free protection.

When it comes to protecting you and your family’s devices, you get what you pay for. Nearly half of all consumers worldwide have been victims of cybercrime. Every link clicked, email opened, app downloaded, and network joined is an opportunity for hackers to compromise your personal data.

Even established threats like ransomware are continuously evolving, and new threats like cryptojacking are being added to an already diverse threat landscape. Webroot offers complete protection from viruses and identity theft for all your devices, without slowing you down.

Review: Cloudwards

Webroot SecureAnywhere is a fast and efficient antivirus solution that boasts some of the most effective security measures we’ve seen. Though it’s not perfect, it’s pricing scheme could use some tweaking, it’s a strong contender for most people’s attentions. Read our full review for the details.

you get support for smartphones and tablets, along with a password manager. We weren’t able to test the password manager, but most antivirus offerings in this area are lackluster. We recommend Dashlane (read our Dashlane review) for this, but check out our guide to the best password managers for more options.

The premium offering comes with 25GB of cloud storage. It’s a nice inclusion, but we’d recommend you look through our cloud storage reviews for a better option.

11. Mcafee AntiVirus Plus

McAfee AntiVirus Plus

Premium antivirus, identity and privacy protection for your PCs, Macs, smartphones, and tablets Make the digital world a safer place for kids. Your personal safety advisor wherever you go online.

Review: TopTenReviews

When viruses tried to download to our computers, McAfee interrupted and tagged them. Even when we tried to resume the download, McAfee again stopped the download and displayed its warning messages. When we persisted, McAfee quickly caught the threats as the downloads completed and move them to the quarantine folder.

Overall this antimalware program wasn’t difficult to set up. It required the same steps and processes as most antivirus software. Links and tabs are clearly labeled, and the most important features, like real-time scanning and automatic updates, are active once the program is installed.

We did find it hard to locate the quarantine folder but finally found it after clicking on the Settings icon. Also, while McAfee automatically updates itself, you do have to restart your computer for updates to go into effect.

12. Eset Nod32 Antivirus

ESET NOD32 Antivirus
Automated threat evaluation combined with world-class security researchers 24/7 local and reliable assistance round the globe in your language Effortless implementation. Single pane of glass, one-click management for all products Multilayered technology assures best detection rates and minimal false positives

Review: TopTenReviews

ESET NOD32 Antivirus blocked 99 percent of more than 300 malware samples we used to test antivirus software. It also scored above average in other independent lab tests, making it a good solution for protecting your Windows computer or laptop. ESET recognizes viruses, worms, Trojans, spyware, rootkits ransomware and phishing schemes, and it blocks you from visiting sites that are known to have malware hidden on them.

In our testing, ESET NOD32 was probably the easiest program to download, install and use. When we pressed the download link, the program installed itself and immediately began scanning our system for any threats. We didn’t have to manually set up anything.

It blocked malicious sites and displayed in-browser warning messages without having to enable any browser extensions. When we were ready to schedule scans and set up custom scans, ESET was so well laid out that we were quickly able to find the function tabs and links we needed.

Review: SoftwareAdvice

We have been using Sophos Endpoint Protection for about 2 years now and we love it. The best part is the ability to control our Virus protection settings from a central webpage. We use it for more than virus protection we also use it to limit our corporate users internet access.

The feature we love it the ability to select categories (Violence, Drinking, Entertainment) This added an additional layer of security. The dashboard is great it gives us a quick look at the status of our devices. We know that all of our end users and servers are protected.

We have enabled email noticications so we will get an alert that there is an Issue that IT needs to look into . Tha best part is the license is per user not machine. So some of our IT guys have 2-3 computers that all are protected with out the cost of additinoal licenses.

Very few Cons sometimes you have to dig a little to get to a setting in the cloud console. Also, the support is generally a long wait and the first tier isn’t very knowledgeable. Luckily we don’t callsupport a lot.I really wish i could buy the product direct and not have to go through a third-party reseller.

Review: sitejabber

I did buy StartMail once. It didn’t take me long to figure out that in order for anyone else on the planet to be able to read my emails, I’d have to give each one security questions to answer first.

How to arrange security questions? Via your smartphone? A free email provider, like Gmail? Snail mail?

Review: Amazon

After a glitch that I had with the program due to my own error, I downloaded the program and it is an exceptional program. I don’t have problems getting emails from locations that I go on like I used to due to this program. That is a big plus. I love the technical support since they do their best to get back with you very quickly to help and resolve any problem you have.

The problem I had was because of my own error as well. It’s amazing how you can trust this program and know you don’t have to search and search for help when again, it’s just an email away. I would highly recommend this product. I have not had any problems with it due to their errors only mine.

And the installation is also easy to install. I had several emails as well from the company to make sure I was enjoying the software so the company does care that you are satisfied with their product. I’ve purchased a lot of software and never had the company email me to make sure their product was working properly and that I was enjoying the product. Great Company!

I have Alex that works for the company that has emailed me several times since I had messed up and he was very patient and easy to understand to help me resolve my issue. You can’t ask for any better service than that.

18. Emsisoft Anti-Malware

Your computing power is collectively sold on the black market to send spams, attack others or store illegal content.

Any unnecessary duplicates in detection are avoided, enabling the least impact on memory and overall hardware resources. Hackers use phishing techniques and keyloggers to get your most valuable passwords and empty your bank- or PayPal-accounts invisibly within seconds.

Review: PCmag

Emsisoft is an exception. The staff that creates and maintains Emsisoft Anti-Malware is distributed all over the world, from the US to New Zealand to Antarctica and more. Regardless of where it originated, it proved effective in our malware protection and ransomware protection tests but tanked our antiphishing test.

Emsisoft recently reduced this product’s list price from $39.99 per year to $29.99 (which had previously been the semi-permanent sale price). Many competitors, more than a dozen of them, still go for roughly $40, so Emsisoft is a bargain. At $49.99 per year, Symantec Norton AntiVirus Basic costs a bit more. McAfee looks expensive, with a $59.99 per year subscription, but that lets you install it on every Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS device in your household.
